While we learn about and share your unique experiences and perspectives, we also like to discuss community projects, programs and initiatives that can help with the settling-in process. We are kindly sponsored by the Ethnic Communities Development Fund, a program created and supported by the Ministry for Ethnic Communities to open more spaces for migrants, grow their skills and celebrate their culture.

<title>Making Yourself At Home: Bianca from Italy</title>
<description>Today we are joined by Bianca — born in Milan to an Italian and Syrian family, and shaped by a multicultural upbringing that sparked her curiosity about the world early on.
After studying journalism and working in digital marketing in Amsterdam, Bianca felt the pull to slow down and realign her life. That led her on a journey through India, Nepal, and Morocco — where yoga, meditation, and living closer to nature became central to her path.
Now based in New Zealand, she’s rebuilding her life with intention — teaching yoga, creating community, and launching The Kindness Supper Club, a space for mindful connection, plant-based food, and meaningful conversations.
Bianca’s story is all about listening inward, embracing change, and creating a life rooted in purpose.

<title>Making Yourself At Home: Kirsten from USA</title>
<description>Kirsten Lunde is a wife, mother and grandmother who grew up and lived most of her life in the San Francisco Bay Area in the US. Her eclectic career there included theatre, hospitality, public service and retail before she started working from home to care for her younger two children, who have needed extra care including several years of homeschooling. After a short stint in Colorado, Kirsten's husband Glenn, a native Kiwi born in Dunedin, had an opportunity to house-sit for family in New Plymouth as a means of establishing a life in New Zealand. So Kirsten, Glenn, and their two younger children arrived in Taranaki in February of 2020, just in time for the world to shut down for COVID. With such an unusual start to life here, Kirsten turned to work from home which includes transcription, AI training, and especially her small board game publishing business through which she successfully crowdfunded and published her classical music-themed board game Ovation with more games on the way. Her community in New Zealand is largely centered on board games, and she runs a monthly game event lovally featuring the social deduction game, Blood on the Clocktower.</description>

<title>Making Yourself At Home: Mervyn from England</title>
<description>Originally from England, Mervyn moved to New Zealand in 1971, arriving as a PE (Physical education) and English teacher knowing no one. Within a year — as he describes it, “miraculously” — he met Jill. They married, settled in New Plymouth, and built a life together raising their three children.
Mervyn taught at Sacred Heart before beginning a 28-year teaching journey at Spotswood College, where he specialised in English and drama. His passion for language, storytelling, and young people has remained a constant thread throughout his life.
A member of the Baha’i community, Mervyn is currently involved in organising the Taranaki Race Unity Speech Awards, supporting young voices to speak with courage and conviction.
Between 2004 and 2012, Mervyn and Jill worked in China, teaching English at four universities — an experience that broadened their worldview and deepened their love of learning.
Though officially retired, Mervyn still tutors a small number of students — a privilege he treasures, as he believes he still has much to learn himself.
New Plymouth is home. And as Mervyn says, seeing the mountain still fills him with delight — a daily reminder that moving to New Zealand was the best decision of his life."

<title>Making Yourself At Home: Chloe from France</title>
<description>Chloe moved from France to New Zealand in 2015 with her partner. After spending three months travelling around the country, they settled in Auckland, where she worked towards passing her English exam so she could practise as an osteopath in New Zealand.
After a year in Auckland, they were ready for a lifestyle change and moved to New Plymouth. Passionate about surfing, hiking, and biking, Taranaki felt like the perfect fit — especially for the surf. It has also been a wonderful place to raise their two children, who are now seven and four.
After her son was born, Chloe opened her own clinic, Holistic Osteopath, to create more flexibility around family life. She supports people with a wide range of conditions, including back pain, sprain injuries, and headaches. She is especially passionate about working with women during pregnancy and postpartum, as well as caring for babies.
Chloe has found a beautiful balance between work, family, and the outdoors — and Taranaki now truly feels like home.

Her journey has evolved a lot since then. She still keeps one foot in the wine industry, but most of her energy now goes into wellness, yoga, massage, and nutrition. She loves being in nature, living van life, learning, taking courses (online or in person), and deepening her understanding of herself and the people around her.

<title>Making Yourself At Home with Alex</title>
<description>Meet Alex — an environmental policy professional, adventurer at heart, and proud Taranaki local. Her journey began back in 2015 when she arrived in Aotearoa on a working holiday visa, backpacked across the country, and fell head-over-heels for New Plymouth... and for her future husband, too!
After a few years back in Peru, Alex returned to Taranaki in 2020 — just before Covid hit — drawn by the perfect mix of ocean and mountain, and the lifestyle that invites you outdoors every day.
These days, Alex is a mum of two who loves spending time outside with her family, exploring trails and connecting with nature. Through her work in environmental policy, she’s helping people and organisations make meaningful shifts toward more sustainable ways of living. She’s also deeply involved in her community, contributing to projects like Community Energy Taranaki, The Nature Connection Trust’s Trails and Tots programme, and the New Plymouth Montessori School.

<title>Making yourself at home with Franziska from Germany</title>
<description>Franziska grew up in Germany, where bread is more than just food — it’s part of the country’s cultural heritage. For her, a good loaf is a daily reminder that the simplest things can bring the deepest joy. With just water, flour, and salt, and the ancient magic of fermentation, something truly extraordinary can be created.
When Franziska and her family of six moved to New Zealand, she found herself longing for the honest, crusty loaves of home. Her kitchen soon turned into a sourdough laboratory, filled with experiments, laughter, and the comforting smell of fresh bread. Before long, their big family table became a gathering place for friends and neighbours, all returning for “just one more slice.”
Today, Franziska is the owner of Bumblebee Bakery in New Plymouth, where she continues to share her love of traditional German bread, bringing a taste of home to her new community — one loaf at a time.

<title>Making yourself at home with Lucia from Argentina</title>
<description>Lucia is from Argentina and moved to New Zealand in 2018 searching for a new life adventure. She first arrived in Christchurch, where she already knew someone. In 2020, she moved up to New Plymouth because she got a job there, and as soon as she arrived, she met Kyle, her partner.
She is originally an Architect Designer and a Project Manager, and that is what she had been doing for work until she had her son. Since having her son Koa, who is almost 2 years old, she has been staying home with him. Raising him and seeing him grow is their main priority these days.
Lucia has also started a little project where she shares her experiences, learnings, and reflections on motherhood. She writes on Substack and briefly shares these writings on an Instagram page called Creciendo con Luli (Growing with Luli).
In addition, Lucia and her partner run a design and screenprinting studio where they have been collaborating with like-minded businesses, creating fun and special designs for each of them. When she says “they,” it is actually Kyle who is the artist and Lucia who helps out with coordination and paperwork!
